How many fish tanks do you want to have in your home? Is there such a thing as too many fish tanks? The secret is out: Keep small things small. 😊 I have 6 fish tanks in my home, but they are not the traditional kind of ‘fish tank’. They are more like modern-looking plastic containers that hold fish. Here’s a photo of one of them. I got it from the fish shop for about $90 bucks. It has an inbuilt filter, a LED light and because it is made of plastic, it won’t shatter to bits if I accidentally hit it. Perfect!

Of course when I bought my first fish tank, I did not know that there are permits governing fish tanks in HDB flats! LOL! Really there are! 😅 Luckily, it has no impact on me, an ordinary person who just wants to have some ‘moving water’ in the home, in the name of good Feng Shui in the house. So to answer the question: How many fish tanks do I have in my home? The answer is 6.  Why do I want 6 fish tanks? Well, I didn’t plan it. When I worked as a childcare teacher many, many years ago, I became a willing ‘dumping ground’ for the children’s unwanted pets. See? I already told you that keeping fish is an extra job (chore) to us ordinary people, on top of housework and office work and looking after our dependents. I guess I should have said no to the parents, but I kept thinking: “Oh well, I already have 1 fish, what is 1 more? Oh well, I already have 10 fishes, what is 10 more fishes?” LOL, too funny! But this is the truth. Also, you know there is a place where you can catch long kang (drain) fish near my then working place, the childcare centre. And the parents who bring their kids there really don’t want to rear the fish that their kids caught, so they would always convince their kids to pass the fish to Teacher Me, and I will love the fish on their behalf, and next time they can come to my home to visit their fish. LOL! I’m just a softie when it comes to animals! 😂 And because children find everything exciting, only 1 or 2 kids remember Teacher Me was looking after their fishes, and they are the only ones who have really ever come to visit their ‘beloved’ fish.

I’ve had a read on “HDB Fish Tank Permit”. You see, if you followed my suggestion in my blog _______ on a fish tank size suitable for an ordinary family, then a 1 feet or 2 feet sized fish tank is no problem, as long as it is supported on a 4-legged rack and it does not exceed 600kg per room. 600kg!! If you had to change a third of the water every week, as I will teach you in my blog _______, that means you need to carry 200kg of water in pails to and from your toilet. That’s crazy! 😆 Don’t go and buy a gigantic fish tank or a massive fish tank!!!

Where do you buy the 4-legged iron rack for your fish tank? From the fish shop, of course! Just tell the fish shop Uncle what you need, and he will order it for you, and he will also get it delivered to your home. A standard 4-legged iron rack for your 2 feet fish tank costs about $65 – $90.

If you go on to read the FAQ in HDB website, you will learn that, in line with the Building Control Act and Regulations (BCA) for residential properties, our HDB flats are designed to hold an imposed load of 150 kg/m2. What this means is don’t squeeze all your sofa, tables, fish tanks and what-nots all together in only a corner of your living room. Spread out the furniture and you should be alright! And remember, don’t buy a gigantic fish tank or a massive fish tank!
